A workshop with Jennifer McClure

Many of us made our favorite photographs when we first picked up our cameras. But as we master the technology, we often lose sight of our original spark. This class will look at your patterns and inspirations to help you refine your personal style and reconnect with your own work. We will focus on your intentions and the story you want to tell, as well as the way you tell it. By tapping into your own experiences, emotions, and obsessions, you will learn how to make work that excites you again.

We will do an in-depth look at work you have already made on the first day of class. You will bring in working projects or random groups of photographs that you love but haven’t used. We’ll look for the visual and emotional clues in your photographs that lead us to your personal story. These photographs might already have the making of a project in them, or they might be the springboard for a new one. Based on our selections in the first class, you may either fill out the story with additional work from your archives or shoot more based on new ideas for the second class. We will edit and sequence the work, leaving you with a recontextualized version of your projects and a clear sense of your personal strengths. You will leave this class with a deeper sense of your purpose as a photographer.

Students should prepare up to 25 – 50 photos for the first day of class.
