The focus of this workshop will be on folded paper book structures that pair well with photographic processes.

We will create books that do not require sewing. Kimberly will take you through the process of choosing and folding paper into various accordion folds and pleats. We will finish the books with covers. Some of these designs are inspired by The Art of the Fold by Hedi Kyle and Ulla Warchal and Complete Pleats and Folding Techniques by Paul Jackson.

A companion Cyanotype Class is being offered. Click here for more information.

The designs that you will learn are:

  • Basic and variant Accordion folded books Map Fold book

  • Lotus Fold book

  • Blizzard book

  • Crown book

Kimberly Chiaris grew up with a love for all things creative and found a voice to express herself through photo-based art. She received a BFA in Photography from the Kansas City Art Institute. She uses digital capture and photoshop to create alternative process images and often incorporates other materials such as encaustic wax, shellac, silver leaf, embroidery, found objects, and more in her work. She has recently been exploring bookmaking as well as other dimensional forms. Ideas concerning memory, ancestry, family, and time are her passion.
