Photographers and artists JoAnn Chaus and JP Terlizzi are not only good friends but also pivotal support to one another photographically. Working independently as well as collaboratively, they encourage each other to explore the “what ifs” when making photographs or ideation of new work. In this online conversation, JoAnn and JP will address how they remove barriers to creativity, cultivate a collaborative work environment, discuss the behind-the-scenes inspirations and strategies they each employ in developing ideas as well, as share their successes and challenges.

Artist Bios

JoAnn Chaus is an American photographer from and based in the New York metro area.  She has a strong affinity for color, influenced by her childhood home and the early color giants William Eggleston, Stephen Shore and Saul Leiter, and by the intimate family and self-portraiture work of Elinor Carucci and Jen Davis.  JoAnn holds two certificates from the International Center of Photography in New York City. In 2016 JoAnn self-published “Sweetie & Hansom”, a 60-image book with original text exploring family, relationships and loss.  Her current body of work, “Conversations with Myself”, is a collection of performative self-portraiture that explores women’s roles and identity, currently under edit for publishing. JoAnn’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and holds a myriad of special recognitions and awards. JP Terlizzi is a New York City photographer whose contemporary practice explores themes of memory, relationship, and identity. His images are rooted in the personal and heavily influenced around the notion of home, legacy, and family. He is curious how the past relates and intersects with the present and how the present enlivens the past, shaping one’s identity. JP earned a BFA in Communication Design at Kutztown University of PA with a background in graphic design and advertising. He has studied photography at both the International Center of Photography in New York and Maine Media College in Rockport, ME. JP has received notable honors and recognition and his work has been exhibited widely in galleries and museums across the United States and internationally.
