Artist Statement

Family Story. All families have their origin story. My maternal family arrived at Ellis Island in the early 1900s, one step ahead of the czar, fleeing the pogroms of Russia. Settling in Connecticut, my great-grandparents and their children spoke no English, and began their life here facing many of the same prejudices and struggles that today's immigrants confront, over one hundred years later. In this project, I am exploring the family through the lens of five generations of women, from their humble beginning here peddling vegetables and newspapers on the street. From my Great-grandmother Jennie through my daughter Sara, I am looking at patterns and relationships across the years, imagining conversations and connections that may or may not have happened. I am integrating vintage and contemporary family photos with the landscape of Connecticut, where we have all spent the majority of our lives. They are ghosts in the landscape, and I am living my life overlaid on a rich history which is in many ways a mystery than I can only infer and imagine.
