Photo Zine Crash Course! with Jeff Phillips 6/1

Photo Zine Crash Course! with Jeff Phillips 6/1

Photo zines are hand-made, self-published books that provide an astounding opportunity for creative expression through a democratized platform. Because they are easy and inexpensive to create and distribute, zines can serve as promotional pieces for exhibitions or as introductions to curators and portfolio reviewers. They can be made as one-of-a-kind objects or produced in unlimited numbers through commercial printing. Zines are collected by many public and university libraries and are often sought after by collectors.

This three-hour lecture-style session with Jeff Phillips helps creators at all levels of experience gain an understanding of the basics of the photo zine-making process, from concept to completion. We begin our exploration with a fun and fast-paced tour of the expansive photo zine universe, perusing the freshest new zines created by established and emerging contemporary photographic artists.

Through live demonstrations, you'll learn the fundamentals of design and construction, such as material selection and options for folding and binding. Jeff will demonstrate approaches to layout and production, including physical assembly of a zine, or building a zine using free software.  Finally, we compare printing and publishing options for your zine, from home printers to online printing services.

Whether you want to raise awareness about your practice, reenergize a stalled project, or quickly test ideas for a photo book, this workshop builds your competence and confidence about making photo zines. Discover how easy it can be to share your work with the world!

This session is an online-only lecture-style presentation, with Q&A at the end.
