Course Description:  
This class will expand your visual vocabulary and embolden your thought process— so you can pre-visualize and execute compelling bodies of work. Through thoughtful shooting assignments, portfolio reviews, readings, student discussions, and critiques, we will aim to gain a deeper understanding of the trajectory of photography from its history to its contemporary practice. This class will introduce you to photography's conceptual and expressive potential as an art form while exposing students to a diverse roster of artists. The inner landscape of the human mind is rich with material that could become our greatest muse. The purpose of this class is to teach students how to use their cameras with the intent to turn them into powerful visuals that elicit their desired response.

Course Format
This class will meet on a Friday for three hours every two weeks. Shooting assignments from this class will ask you to experiment with different ways of seeing and thinking about image-making. Students will be encouraged to approach given assignments with curiosity and imagination. In class, critiques will expect you to discuss your work, respond to feedback, and write and engage deeply in the work of your colleagues.

Course Objectives
Students will hone in on their artistic interests and personal vision  .
Students will be assigned shooting assignments and be expected to bring work to critiques .
Students will be introduced to historical and contemporary photography.
Students will be exposed to a diverse range of artists and study their art practice and execution.
Students will learn to transform their theoretical ideas and interests into images.
Students will be given a roadmap and tools to plan their creative journey ahead.

Enrollment: Minimum six students, maximum eight students

Short Bio: Manjari Sharma was born and raised in Mumbai, India, and now calls Los Angeles her home. Sharma is a visual artist and art educator that makes work addressing the issues of memory, family, identity, and personal mythology. Manjari’s project ‘Darshan,’ a photographic re-imagining of deities, garnered her wide critical acclaim and was published as a part of a limited edition book series with Nazaraeli Press in 2021. In 2017 the Metropolitan Museum of Art commissioned Manjari to create a collaborative series favorably reviewed in the New York Times by Art critic Roberta Smith and has traveled to the Louisiana Museum of Art in Denmark and Kunsthalle Mannheim in Germany. Her works have been recognized by The New York Times, Vice Magazine, CNN, LA Times, and The Huffington Post and can be found in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Carlos Museum, Emory University, and Birmingham Museum of Art amongst various private collections.
