August CollageShop Sessions with Tay Butler
The workshop will come in 2 parts:
1 pm Mountain Time on August 6th, 2020
Part 1 consists of the history, applications, and compositions of collage. It will conclude with the composition of an original collage for each student.
1 pm Mountain Time on August 13th, 2020
Part 2 will continue where part 1 left off, migrating a finished collage or isolated compositions to the scanner where digital collage techniques will be explored.
Cost: Each one-hour workshop is $20 for non-members and free for members. If you sign up for both workshops the total fee is $30.00

Zoom Workshop Description
CollageShop is two-part workshop made up of 1-hour workshops with a presentation about the medium of collage art. Tay will present a very brief presentation on the history of collage and highlight applications, methodologies, uses, and notable artists (especially Black artists) who work in the vast and expansive medium of collage, as well as cover some of my work and my connection to collage. The goal is to convey why I think collage is so important as an art practice, not only for Black artists, but the art community as a whole. This presentation will take place in the form of Power Point, sharing my screen with students.
Following this talk, Tay will explain some of his artistic processes and methodologies. Approximately 20 minutes of presentation will lead straight into the workshop portion, where he will watch students make their own collage, helping to answer any questions or concerns every step of the way.
Supplies list for students :
Desired magazines (Halfprice Books, eBay are good sources for .50 to 1.00 used magazines)
Short-blade scissors, approximately 2 inches (high-end Fiskars…low-end any affordable brand)
Glue tape dispensers (TapeRunner XL from PaperSource) OR glue sticks (UHU sticks)
1-2 sheets of Bristol Paper (25 sheet 9×12 inch pads usually around 10 dollars)

Tay Butler is a multi-hyphenate who utilizes photography, collage, video, music, installation, and performance to identify and confront history, migration, memory, and identity from the Black American experience. Tay begins with literature, folklore, national and local media, editorial materials, ephemera and historical documents. This content is then digitized, photographed, cut, clipped, extended, shrunk, enlarged, exposed, uncovered, repeated, redacted, re-contextualized. Constructing revisionist histories that are fictional but true, authentic yet imagined, his stories are woven together into a rich tapestry that can last longer than human history.
Tay has taught private and community-based collage workshops for Fotofest and Project Row Houses, Houston, TX.
