Umbilicus

STATEMENT

Umbilicus is a conceptual response to my life as the mother of nine children. I sculpt spheres and build 'sets' in my studio, sometimes adding collected objects and oddities. These sets are playfully referred to as 'mother-worlds.' The spherical form, or orb, is an element I have referenced in my work throughout my career.  It represents the womb, the original home of every living being. Whereas motherhood is a bit of a gamble in terms of predictable outcome, my work gives me a sense of control, or at least the illusion of it.

I shoot film with an early Hasselblad and an 8 x10 Gundlach. The final exhibition prints are a combination of platinum palladiums on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag and archival inkjets on Awagami Inbe.
