STATEMENT
From Glasgow’s juror statement, “Issues of agency, influence, memory, interpretation, and materiality infuse Center Forward 2015 with context as complex as the images are striking. Kris Graves’s images of black American male experience are two showpieces of the exhibition. Larry and The Artist implore the viewer to reflect on and discuss issues of race in our country. Graves leaves us contemplating the location of power in the historically problematic photographic relationship between the photographer, sitter, viewer, and the community. HeLa, by Holly Reynoso, focuses on the subject of HeLa cells, which have permeated our society without permission of the woman from whom they were taken. Sonja Lawyer’s work using found images, recreate and compositionally reenact, the forced separation of black American families historically through slavery through to the present mass incarceration of black males. Prancing Snowflake, by Dawn D. Surratt, brings to the forefront our strange and troubled relationship with nature and it’s bewitching aspects, with this; the compulsion to own and conquer has strange and unsettling consequences. I am interested in images that are bold, courageous, and illuminate vanguard perspectives. The group of images that make up Center Forward 2015 are dynamic in all of these ways.”
