Artists Statement:

Contemporary Southern identity is complex. My images capture the essence of the South and her people. My calling is to visually interrogate the spirit of evangelicals, as well as bring within the margins of society those who are “othered” by structural norms. They seek to regain a common geographical identity, to create a more inclusive American story.

Poverty is ubiquitous in the South, so much so, that it travels in disguise. What do we photograph when it is identifiable? The poor surround us; yet remain invisible, as we neglect to acknowledge their presence.

Photography can be redemptive, if it visualizes the expressions that hold sway over a population; and endeavors to capture the people and how they inhabit their own place.

We live in a realm where despair and hope coexist. I've tried to make a portrait in and of that space.
