Artist Statement

I am generally a street photographer. Shooting in the scruff and scrum of the city where I live, the street has always offered a close-up view into the happenstance of life. This, “Manhatta”, began by looking out the window where I work. With morning sunlight falling upon my face, it pulled me to the window to view the sunrise reflections on buildings, watching its light streaking through the clouds as the sun moved across the sky. Coincidently, I rediscovered an old film. This rediscovery led me to watch the view through the office windows where I work. Everyday was a new discovery, with an impetus to record this wondrous view. As the seasons and the weather changed, so did what I was witnessing. Every morning would bring a new anticipation of what might unfold.

My first images were an homage to the film “Manhatta”. They were black and white and somewhat pictorial. To make this more personal and less of an emulation, I needed to push pass the emulation through the use of color, abstraction, and reflection, though I still find black and white appropriate for my feelings of the view.
