October 6th, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

These hours subject to change depending on the specific events the class chooses to document.

October 7th, 12:00 - 5:00 pm

Tuition: $350.00

Instructor: Kevin Moloney
New York Times Contract Photojournalist www.KevinMoloney.com

Description:
Photographing people quickly and decisively in unposed, unfolding situations is among the greatest of photographic challenges. Learn not only how to properly handle cameras for quick action, but how to translate chaos into a visual ballet.

Objectives:
• Improve camera handling and craft for the demands of    photojournalism and documentary still photography.

• Develop skills in capturing the decisive moment and    working quickly and quietly among people as subjects.

• Strengthen skills in gaining access and building rapport    with subjects.

• Spend time on scene, shooting an event as it unfolds.

About the Instructor:

Kevin Moloney is a contract photojournalist for the New York Times and a documentary photographer.
His 20-year career has taken him from pole to pole to cover social issues, news events, cultures and the environment.

His work has also appeared in U.S. News & World Report, Fortune, LIFE, Time, Stern and National Geographic. He was an inaugural recipient of the Ford Environmental Journalism Fellowship, an honor that took him to Tierra del Fuego to cover environmental issues.

The Course will meet for a Thursday evening, Saturday day and Sunday afternoon, using the homecoming celebration at Colorado State University as a subject. Lecture time Thursday will cover skills in making live documentary images, and the legal and ethical considerations of working in public. Saturday will be spent on the street making images of the homecoming parade and events. Sunday the workshop will meet to edit and discuss work made by students the day before.

Who should attend:
Any photographer wishing to work more effectively with people -- be that family, travel or in the hustle-bustle of the journalism world -- will benefit from the course.

Schedule:
Thursday evening:
Lecture: What it means to be a documentarian — basic ethical standards, camera techniques and approaching subjects. Documenting an event as it unfolds. Legal and Ethical considerations discussed.

Saturday:
Class and individual shooting at a public event(s).

Sunday:
Workshop: Class evaluation of work produced.
